The City - Augsburg

As the third largest urban complex in Bavaria, combining high tech with history and its own particular way of life with the life sciences, and located at the very center of Europe, Augsburg has long been open to the world. The charismatic transition of the city from a frontier post of the Roman Empire to a Swabian metropolis was founded way back on a rapid economic and cultural evolutionary process. The Romans themselves quickly perceived the advantage of establishing a link between Augsburg and the rest of Europe using the "via Claudia", a Roman highway not only for merchandise, but also travelers carrying information and new ideas.

As a latter-day focal point of the burgeoning textile industry, and more recently, the cradle of so much innovative development in the machine-tool sector, Augsburg, also the home of the Fugger banker family, has continued to demonstrate its traditional outward-looking attitude to the world at large. As we approach the dawn of the third millennium, Augsburg can be viewed as an essential port of call for companies operating in the high tech domains of tomorrow.

Aiming for a leading position in the field of environmental technology, KUMAS e.V, the "Augsburg-Swabia Center of Excellence for the Environment", has set itself an ambitious target. This far-reaching organization, the purpose of which is to facilitate the transfer of technology between the research and economic sectors, has come to be regarded as a veritable springboard for many young start-up founders. It is to be hoped that this same springboard will open the way for a number of space-oriented ventures. The example of the Ariane solid booster casings "made in Augsburg by MT Aerospace AG" could be taken as a starting point.
