Bremen
For many centuries, Bremen has carried the title of "Hanseatic Free City".
Today, it can also lay claim to the status of a strongly space-oriented city, with a population of space research and manufacturing centres unrivalled in Europe. One of the most important projects in which the city is involved is the Ariane programme, with the Astrium GmbH Bremen plant manufacturing the second stage and liquid propellant boosters for Ariane 4. ASTRIUM (now EADS Space Transportation) is also making a major contribution to the new Ariane 5 heavy launcher, constructing various parts of the launcher including the upper stage. In addition, Bremen is playing a leading role in creation of the International Space Station (ISS).
the terms of a contract with the European Space Agency, ASTRIUM has prime contractor responsibility for the Columbus laboratory module, the European contribution to the ISS. Columbus is scheduled for integration with the International Space Station in 2006.
