Ottobrunn / Taufkirchen (All.)
In 1958 Ludwig Bölkow set up his engineers office in Ottobrunn, to the South East of Munich.
The area was still heavily wooded and this country setting witnessed the birth of an endeavour with pioneering work in rocket science and aeronautics, moving on later to space engineering. A wind tunnel concealed in the woods during the 2nd World war was the starting point. Activities burgeoned as the years went by, they embraced the neighbouring community of Taufkirchen and the company Messerschmitt-BölkowBlohm came into being. A series of mergers transformed the enterprise into Deutsche Aerospace then DaimlerChrysler Aerospace. After merger with the French Aerospatial Matra and the Spanish CASA the company now operates as EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space).
Despite all these changes the executive management of EADS remained in the Munich area based in Ottobrunn, with much of the company still located in the local community of Taufkirchen
Ottobrunn is a very young community (established in 1955 with 5 816 residents). Now in the year 2003, approximately 20 000 people live here and the development of these individuals has been intimately bound up with the aerospace industry (there is an unusually high number of professionals with academic backgrounds). The community of Taufkirchen, by contrast, is rooted in history with evidence of prehistoric settlement in the valley threaded by a little stream called the Haching. The 1st record of Taufkirchen dates back to 1148 and the town has an ancient and venerable village centre, even though the majority of the area was built up after 1960, as in Ottobrunn itself.
Although the histories of the 2 communities are very different, they have a great deal in common. The economic structure is focused on flourishing hightech and service industries and agricultural activity has virtually disappeared. These two communities are located in the prosperous Munich area and very well equipped with schools, crèches and Kindergartens, sports facilities and town houses. There is also an outstanding range of cultural entertainment on offer. The 2 communities nestle in an enviable position between the Munich metropolis and the alpine region to the south. They benefit from a high standard of living with excellent opportunities for recreation and leisure. This is the kind of lifestyle that families of highly qualified professionals really appreciate.
