Vernon

Vernon is the second largest town and district capital of the Eure department, with a population of 25,000, situated on the banks of the Seine river on the border of the Ile de France region and Normandy. Set in a privileged environment which includes 42 hectares of public woodland, Vernon has excellent road and rail links with Paris.
Tourist attractions include the Alphonse-George Poulain municipal museum, installed in a former private mansion, with special sections devoted to animal pictures, drawings by Steinlen, and a large and splendid collection of impressionist paintings ("Les Nymphéas" by Monet, works by Bonnard, etc.), the 14th century "Le Temps Jadis" building, the 11/15th century Notre-Dame collegial church, the Chateau de Bizy, with the fountains and waterfalls of its park, and the famous "Vieux Moulin", still a constant source of inspiration for artists today.
The municipal authorities have invested FF 400 million over the last 15 years, providing Vernon with a range of essential facilities and services, including the Philippe Auguste Cultural Centre, sports halls, schools, rest homes for the aged, etc.
The space domain capital of Normandy, Vernon can indeed be regarded as a high tech centre with the presence of Société Européenne de Propulsion, Division SNECMA (1,500 staff), the prime contractor for Ariane launcher propulsion systems, and the Laboratoire de Recherches Balistiques et Aérodynamiques (missile guidance system production and test centre).
